Alarm! Alarm!
Andon pager systems in production and warehouses

When discussing andon systems in production, these systems are often referred to as andon lights. This typically means a light that turns on when someone presses a button or display. The andon system can also be a digital sign that displays a message, number, or color, often shown on a digital display board or screen.

The Origin and Development of Andon Systems

The most effective way to send a direct message to a recipient is through an andon system based on a pager. A pager (also known as a beeper) can alert with sound, flashing lights, or beeping, and can also send text messages.

The andon system originated from quality control methods in Toyota’s production systems. It was designed to signal an issue on the production line. The person who noticed the problem would pull a cord to send a signal to an andon alarm. Often, the alarm was activated by pulling wires connected to a bell.

Today, these systems are primarily buttons or integrated into IT systems that the production already uses. This makes andon alarms wireless and much more flexible. The recipient can carry a bleeper on their belt or as a wristwatch, meaning they are not confined to one location (such as sitting at a screen) but can move freely and still receive alerts.

There are many reasons why you might want to send an andon alarm:

  • Missing items in the packing area

  • Production stoppages somewhere in the process

  • Equipment malfunctions

  • Safety concerns

  • Request for help

You can also use an andon system in retail stores. For example, in clothing stores, you can install call-buttons in fitting rooms so customers can summon staff without leaving the room. Or, when a mechanic on a workshop floor encounters a problem and needs to call a supervisor or request spare parts.
